When getting ready to go on a long trip or a vacation and traveling by car, there are many thing you need to do before going. You will want to go get an oil change, along with oil filter replacement. You will probably want to have an overall inspection done on your car, so you know it doesn’t have any major mechanical problems.
Of course, you will want to be cautious who you take it to, so you don’t get ripped off. You will want to take along a set of tools, and a couple rags, just in case. It is also a good idea to check your tires and brakes. If they need replacement, now would be a good time to do so. You might need to just have your tires rotated and balanced. After doing so, always be sure to go back or do it yourself, to get the lug nuts checked, sometimes they come loose. You will want to have all the fluids checked or just filled.
Make sure to have the radiator full, I always take a gallon of water and duct tape and electrical tape when I go on road trips, just in case. You want to be sure not to have any blown out light bulbs. Taking along a set of jumper cables is always a good idea. I also recommend taking a can of fix a flat, along with a fully inflated spare tire. I strongly suggest taking snacks and drinks in a cooler. I always bring along a blanket, a pillow, and a jacket. As I told my children, when they were small, “you never know”. If you are a female, and you are traveling alone, make sure to have some form of protection, just incase of a break down, carry a flashlight with you. Inform family or friends where you are going, in case you don’t arrive to your destination or arrive back home at your scheduled time, someone will have an idea where you may be. Be sure to take your cell phone, of course, and the car and house chargers.
A map, or atlas and possibly a GPS is very helpful. I always like to book my hotel in advance, so I don’t start getting tired and can’t find a hotel, or they are full or outrageously priced, because they know you are tired and will probably stay in spite of the cost. A mapped out itinerary is a good thing to have, so you know when you will be where, unless you are taking a last minute trip, and everything is planned as you go.
