Blue Ridge Parkway is probably the best road to travel by car. There are so many wonderful things to see. It is a beautiful 469 mile road that travels through the breath-taking Blue Ridge Mountains. The parkway connects Shenandoah, Virginia to the Great Smoky Mountains in North Carolina. The mountains get their blue hue from the combination of the chemical make up from all the hundreds of types of trees present in the forest. While on this long scenic ride, there are a lot of showy wildflowers, and keep your eyes peeled, you may spot a bear. This is a great location for hiking, camping or a picnic.
Alaska has a great route to visit, it is the 127 mile Seward Highway. This highway is composed up of hanging glaciers, remember, we are in Alaska. If you happen to be there in the summer time, there is a good chance you may spot a whale, there is a site for whale watching, how cool! If you came prepared for the outdoors you may want to do some fishing, if not, maybe you just drive along and look for a moose, or perhaps even an eagle.
The Florida Keys has a very unique road of travel, where you are surrounded by water, water and um, more water. This is a 127 mile drive, that some folks consider a water wonderland, which consists of the Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic Ocean, Key West and Florida Bay. This water paradise has 40 bridges and honors Henry Flagler’s historic, ‘Over-Sea Railroad.’ While out on this water play place, you can go diving, snorkeling, look for wildlife, or even have a nice dinner on the waterfront.
Another very interesting road to travel might be the Peter Norbeck Scenic Highway in South Dakota. This is a 70 mile travel through the Black Hills. This is a great place to see Mount Rushmore, along with some other very cool structures such as, spiral bridges, granite formations and tunnels. While on this journey, you will go onto Needles Highway, the name says it all. This road trip offers rock climbing, and a fantastic opportunity to go to the 35,000 acre Norbeck Wildlife Preserve, where if you are lucky, you might spot a buffalo or even an elk.
California Pacific Coast Highway, which is also known as Route 1 offers a ocean side ride, with some parts lined with giant redwood paths. It is 123 miles long, and runs along the entire states coast, where you can get a great view of the waves crashing, and sea lions barking and just water as far as the eye can see and beyond. This drive goes from Morro Bay through a volcano cone, all the way to Monterey.
The Navajo Routes 12 and 64 are a very different type of drive out in Arizona. There is a 100 mile route famously called, Dine’Tah, which translates to ‘Among the People’. While on this out west trip, you will see many forests, mountains, canyons, and of course, deserts. A couple other points of interest here are Wind Rock, which is the Navajo Capital, and the Navajo National Museum, which contains a lot of Navajo artifacts.
So, get in your car, and go for a drive, and discover all the amazing places America has to offer.
